Gogol biography Vii

Published: April 2, the Gallery of his heroes amazes with artistic accuracy. Some of them take bribes with greyhounds, they get a fifth from the dead serfs and fear “significant faces”. Others protect the legal order in Zaporozhye and a dark Ukrainian night, saddling the devil, fly behind Cherevichki. In his books, we are habitually waiting for laughter, but between the lines we read "Tears invisible to the world." The figure of Nikolai Gogol is surrounded by a halo of mysticism.

On the birthday of the great writer Diletant. How did the plan for the story "Wii" arose? The mother of Nikolai Vasilyevich was a very devout woman. Experts who studied the work of the writer are unanimous in the opinion that the fear of the afterlife of Gogol was rooted in childhood. With this fear, he did not part all his life and transferred him to the mystical story “Wiy”.

The writer said that he only recorded a popular tradition, without changing a single word in it. However, later literary scholars and folklorists did not find any references to legends, which at least vaguely resembled the plot of the Gogol story. Meanwhile, it is known that Nikolai Vasilievich suffered from a nervous disorder - he heard the voices telling him about the horrors of the afterlife.

Perhaps this is how the plan of "Viya" arose. And yet it is impossible to call Gogol a mystic. Even the devil with him is a comic figure rather, as we see her in “Evenings on a Farm near Dikanka”. Prophetic dreams Nikolai Gogol sacredly believed in prophetic dreams. Perhaps he was shocked by an episode from his father’s life. As a teenager, he saw in a dream his future bride - a neighboring girl, who was not even a year old.

Vasily Gogol patiently waited for her to grow up to marry her and fulfill the omen that was revealed in a dream. I must say that the theme of sleep as a leitmotif passes through all the works of the writer. For him, this is a metaphorical category. In late letters, when Gogol turns to religion, he will write that Russia is in a “sinful dream”, and having perked up, it “repents and will be saved”.

Nikolai Gogol, like his father, heard voices and suffered from nervous seizures, after which he fell into severe depression. The periods of unprecedented mental upsurge were replaced by a decline. Experts disagree on what kind of disorder the writer had. Of course, we are not talking about schizophrenia, but manic-depressive psychosis could well be. I must say that during the time of Gogol they did not even know about such a disease.

The writer was afraid that he would be accepted for the dead and buried alive, so the last 11 years of his life he always slept sitting. He strictly forbade his friends to bury his body until the signs of decomposition show himself. Forever the masterpiece “Dead Souls”, Gogol, was conceived as a trilogy. He worked on this work for more than 10 years, constantly redoing the already written chapters.

Nikolai Vasilievich called his work the Great. On the night of February 24, the writer suddenly burns the second volume. The next day, he will tell his friends what he did, obeying the command of an evil spirit. I must say that about a month before Gogol took possession of the inexplicable fear of death, he threw a pen and spent the whole nights in prayers.

However, among some experts there is an opinion that there were no mysterious votes, and the writer burned the manuscript by accident, confusing with other papers. After the destruction of Dead Souls, Gogol began to limit himself in food and dream, he preferred solitude. The content of the second volume of Dead Souls, Gogol’s great poem, alas, can only be restored partially - according to the preserved drafts and letters of Nikolai Vasilyevich.

Gogol, which suffers from heavy phobias, was desperately looking for mental balance to religion. It is not surprising that in the last years of his life he was looking for salvation in Orthodoxy. It is enough to look at the journalistic collection “Selected places from correspondence with friends” to understand how the writer's worldview has changed. This is a real sermon in severe moralizing tone.

Contemporaries were disappointed: with his new work, Gogol seemed to deny everything that he had done before. As if there was no brilliant prose in which the vices of society were ridiculed. Especially zealously Nikolai Vasilyevich was accused by Vissarion Belinsky. He was perplexed as a “thinking person” could take the path of mysticism. The mysterious death of the great writer Mystic accompanied the whole life of the writer.

She did not leave him after death. In general, the death of Nikolai Vasilyevich is shrouded in many legends. Gogol was most afraid that he would be buried alive: it happened that he fell into long fainting that was often confused with a lethargic sleep. The fears of the writer gave rise to rumors that he was buried alive and died of a lack of oxygen in the grave. Experts vividly refuted these rumors, but further events only contributed to their spread.

The writer was buried in the cemetery of the Holy Danilov Monastery, in the year the remains were reburied in the Novodevichy cemetery.

The Soviet writer Vladimir Lidin, who was present at the exhumation, said that there was no skull in the grave. In addition, the coffin cover inside was allegedly scratched. However, other witnesses of reburial have refuted this information. However, it was reported about looting-someone cut off a piece of the frozen coat, someone pulled the rib and boot. No matter how mysterious the life of the writer seem to us, one thing is undeniable: he made an invaluable contribution to Russian literature, setting it a new development vector.
