With the invasion of the quiet measured life of the tribe of militant “citizens”, the second, most saturated part of the picture begins, where the most cruelty and mercilessness of the Mayan people is shown in the smallest details. The city life of the representatives of this once great civilization is quite interesting.

Contrary to all romantic ideas, life against the backdrop of the Azec pyramids by modern standards was just a vile: crowds of people, stench, poverty, anger in their eyes, bloody spectacles and entertainment-it is unlikely that such associations arise in the mention of Mayan. But it is precisely these episodes, probably, they most accurately show the position of the director, who, after the frantic commercial success of the “passions of Christ”, received a certain freedom of expression.

Now he may not go blindly on the audience expectations, which, as you know, sometimes very, very significantly limit the self -expression of the creators of any form of art, but realize their creative plan. Naturally, to a certain limit. The third conditional part of the film turned out to be very dynamic, reminding at once and “Run, Lola, Run”, and “Walk”, and something else.

In fact, the entire last third of the film is an ongoing chase that does not know fatigue, stops and mercy, and this is no less spectacular than all the previous parts. Naturally, according to the already established tradition, all the heroes of the picture speak exclusively in the Mayan language. The very practice of using extinct, either rare and ancient languages ​​is quite dubious, but the fact that the translation is given in the form of subtitles, undoubtedly, can be attributed to the merits of the film.

And for sure, someone really wants to reduce the number of overly anatomically naturalistic moments, such as: the rally of bodies, chopping off heads, mountains of tens and hundreds of blue, decapitated corpses, blood rivers and the like, not inferior to some “saw”, scenes in their naturalism. But this is all the specifics of the cinema in the style of Gibson - frank, merciless and claiming realism.

Despite the fact that the “Apocalypse” is most reminiscent of the BBC film about the Aborigines of Central Africa, it is very clearly felt by the hand of American cinema, where without it. There are all signs of classical stories about how one person is more cunning, faster and stronger than all his enemies combined. A sort of superhero in a loincloth.
